The New 2019 Route!

The New 2019 Route!

You gave us lots of great feedback on last year’s new route. Thank you! Overall, you loved it! You said it was possibly our most beautiful route yet. You loved all of the back country roads, the lighter traffic than previous years, the Albany moment and all that scenery. You also asked for some changes: not quite so many miles and not quite so many hills.

We heard you and got to work. Herewith, a preview of the new 2019 route! (As always, the caveat that the final route is subject to permitting.)

Day 1: You loved it, we kept it!

For most Riders, Day 1 was the favorite day last year. Don’t mess with success, right? So all of last year’s Day 1 highlights are back: The Baseball Hall of Fame, the oasis in historic Sharon Springs, lunch at the Esperance Historical Society, the afternoon bike trails along the Mohawk River.

Day 2: Less is more

You told us that Day 2 was really gorgeous and really tough. We’ve done several things to make it more manageable.

First, we’ve added an extra oasis and moved some of the others around. As a result, you’ll never go more than 15 miles between oases, just like on every other day.

Second, we changed the last leg before lunch to eliminate several hundred feet of climbing. We’ve also changed several other legs to work around hills. But don’t worry, we left you plenty of hills to chew on, too – we wouldn’t want to disappoint you!

Finally, we knocked a few miles off the route. Day 2 is now (just) under 100 miles!

Meanwhile, we kept the things you loved about Day 2: The quiet, wooded roads; lunch in funky Woodstock; the glorious ride across the Ashokan reservoir.

Day 3: All-new!

Day 3 is completely reconceived from start to finish. Other than the holding area (the final oasis), every rest stop is new, and so is 90% of the route. You’ll still have a big climb over the Shawangunk Ridge in the morning, but it’s a little bit later (just before Oasis 2), half as high and less steep. As with Day 2, we’ve added an extra oasis. And this year, you’ll be riding alongside some beautiful reservoirs in northern New Jersey. We think you’re going to like the change!
